Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

This is a condition that impacts a child’s ability to perceive, socialize with people, and result in repetitive or limited behavioural patterns. It causes difficulties with social communication and interaction. This causes difficulties in places like school and other social settings. ASD symptoms can be seen in children as early as in the first year, children will show delays in achieving their developmental milestones before the age of 2 years. The level of severity may range from high functioning to low functioning depending on the child’s difficulties. Early intervention and treatment can make a significant impact on the lives of those effected with ASD.

The symptoms of ASD which can be seen from the age of 2 years are

• Lack of eye contact
• Not responding to their name
• Delayed language development or loss
• Aggressiveness or withdrawal for others

ASD may continue into adulthood making their behaviour and emotions much more difficult to manage.
